2 Samuel 22:1-51

From Verse 1-6. David praised God for His deliverance from his enemies. When he was in trouble, we called on the Lord. When he was in peace, he also called on the Lord. David acknowledged that only by relying on God that he could defeat the visible enemies. Nevertheless, his true enemy was the invisible Satan. Christians are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesian 6:12

During this shelter-in-place period, we avoid an invisible enemy, the COVID 19 virus. Something so small and subtle. There is no medication or vaccine to fight against it. People take various measures to protect themselves. Satan, the spiritual force of evil, uses this pandemic to ruin the economy, education, health care and church, Satan wants to distract us in worry and fear. We build around ourselves a virtual shelter (food, masks, vitamin C, …etc.) other than God. We should do all measures to prepare and protect our families. But, if we allow ourselves to spend more time in worry and fear rather than fixing our eyes on God; then, we fall into Satan’s virtual shelter-in-place. It “shelters” Christians from living out our lives for God. A proverb describes worry is like a rocking chair, It will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere. Satan puts Christians in a standstill and paralyzes us from witnessing the world through our words and deeds.

From verses 7-16, David described the power of our God who made the earth tremble and quake, the foundations of the heavens shook. God has the power to save us.

From Verses 17-20, God did not just protect us but recuse us from our danger. In a war zone, we need soldiers to protect us. But, we also want soldiers to rescue or evacuate us from the war zone. God indeed is our protector and rescuer.

From Verses 21-28, God rewards those who follow His laws and commands. He is faithful to those who hold fast to His teachings.

From Verses 29-46, David acknowledged that God was the reason that he could defeat His enemies. God provides us health and strength for a reason. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work (John 9:4). As we get older, our health and strength are fading away, we should not waste our time by distracting ourselves with worry and fear. We should devote our time and energy to our vocation. If God put you as a student, do the best for the glory of God. Focus on what God put you in the first place to keep you from worrying about the future.

From Verses 47-51, David praises God: The LORD lives! I am thankful that I worship a living God who showed me kindness and love. He is not a psychological symbol or historical figure but a living God who we can experience and communicate daily. The anecdotes for our crisis are to praise our living God; remember what He has done for us (promises); focus on our vocation (Do the work God put in front of us diligently) and use our time wisely to pursue what is good and honorable.          —- Alan Yam
