Jeremiah 17:1-27

Keep the Sabbath day Holy

But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses. Jer. 17:27

We are guilty of not keeping the Sabbath day holy.  In Jeremiah 17, God does not want the Israelites to carry any load through the gates or do any work on Sabbath day. God wants us to take off our earthly loads and consecrate a day fully devoted to Him. Often times, we are burden by family, work, school, health, finance, relationship…etc that we cannot focus during worship or make it to the service. Our minds wonder off, our eyes glaze on electronic device and our flesh are restless. We look forward to Sunday service to be over with so that we can spend the rest of the day as  our ‘free time’.

How can we consecrate the Sabbath day as a family? Here are some suggestions I find helpful to my family.

  1. Keep a good sleep hygiene daily.
  2. Spend time with God daily.
  3. Set our minds on pleasing the Lord-whatever we do, do it for the Lord.
  4. Do not be a wimpy parents. Not able to participate in a soccer game on Sabbath day is part of the sacrifice. Parents should take a stand not to sign up/bring their children to any extra curriculum activities on Sunday. Parents should teach their children as Christians, we should sacrifice for the LORD even when it sounds ridiculous to others.
  5. No late party and get your clothes ready on Saturday night.
  6. Focus on enjoying and celebrating God during worship. We may not agree with the choices of music, words and presentation by the worship team, but we must not forget worship is all about God, not about ourselves. One day, a pastor talked to a church member. He noticed that this church member never sung during worship service. The member answered, I enjoy listening to other people singing. The pastor replied, “The singing is for the LORD, not for you to enjoy”. Since then, this member starts to sing in worship.
  7. Come to church in person. We, as believers are called to come together to spur love, serve and encourage one another-Hebrew 10:24-25.  We can watch and listen to great sermons through radios, televisions, phones and tablets, however these cannot replace joining and serving in a local church. Satan breaks down Christians by isolation and individualism. Jesus said for where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with them-Matthew 18:20.  Relationship with God and with fellow believers are established through corporate and private gatherings-Acts 2:46.

The city of Jerusalem was destroyed by the Chaldeans (Jeremiah 52:13) because they did not observe the Sabbath day. We all need to take Sabbath day seriously. Let us encourage one another to observe the Sabbath day. — Alan Yam
